Graham Slater - MAAIS Broker

Graham Slater brings a wealth of knowledge from both the insurance and martial arts / fitness industries, to the company.

Graham Slater as the founder of Martial Arts Australia, started referring martial arts clubs to Instrat IMAR Brokers for their business insurance. They were later bought out by AJ Gallagher Insurance Brokers. Graham having built one of the largest martial arts group programs in Australia, he then moved to PSC Brokers (WWSI - Worldwide Sports Insurance).  There he expanded their existing martial arts and fitness insurance portfolio, as a licensed broker (Corporate Authorised Representative – AR - MAA) himself.

GRAHAM SLATER

Principal Broker

After nearly two decades of working with martial arts gym and fitness insurance polices, Graham wanted a brokerage that could help him better serve the martial arts and fitness industries. He then moved to Marsh Advantage Brokers still in the capacity of an AR (MAAIS), working on Marsh Fitness, Gym and Martial Arts Insurance. Joining the largest insurance broker in the world was exciting, challenging and rewarding working on such a large scale.

The
United Insurance Group, Graham’s home for the past two years, has given him greater freedom across more products, to better serve the martial arts and fitness industries. Being in a group of 50+ brokers is the perfect environment for him to engage colleagues, bounce ideas and get guidance on hard-to-place risk sectors. Still focusing on martial arts insurance, fitness insurance and gyms insurance with expansion into Cyber, Tradie, Film/TV, Health, Income Protection, Life, TPD insurances, it keeps him busy.

Graham is passionate about helping martial arts and fitness business owners find the right insurance, remembering how difficult it has been in the past. Having been a multi facility Martial Arts Club and Gym Owner since 1981, for over 35 years, he understands what business owners need to protect their operation.

Having seen many claims over the years and worked as an expert witness to assist the insurers, Graham understands the value of the right insurance, to cover all the risks of each business. Apart from arranging insurance for clients, he also offers business and claims consultancy to better protect owner operators.

Graham still serves to manage  Martial Arts Australia (MAA) Peak Industry Body - The Largest Martial Arts Association in Australia.

Although MAAIS specialise in the Martial Arts, Fitness and Sports sectors, they also arrange insurance in a number of other industries. They believe protecting a client's assets are paramount, but also feel its important to offer a number of related business tools, to help make them become more successful. The principal of the team at MAAIS has over 40+ years experience in the Martial Arts / Fitness Industries and 25+ years arranging insurance. This experience is particularly important as he understands how schools / gyms / studios / academies and clubs operate. His motto is to match an insurance package that is fit for purpose and explains what / how coverage applies to a clients' business.

Over the years many of these types of businesses have diversified by adding new equipment and activities that may not be covered in a standard policy. We call this 'blending' when a martial arts academy introduces a gym section, and or an obstacle course, a cafe and child minding services for example. The insurer needs to know how each business operates as some activities are not included in a general policy and may need to have them endorsed, so they are included. This risk ratings vary with a number of factors based upon operating out of a community centre (hourly rental set up) verses, a full-time facility where the owner leases or owns a factory. The style of each martial art is also rated by intensity / contact of the training and by the number of claims from each discipline.

Have you considered getting an INSURANCE HEALTH CHECK on your existing policies?

This may identify if you have doubled up on any coverage, or have any gaps / exposures in your operation, your may even find you are paying too much for your policies. It's vital to review your insurances each year as some Insurer's policy wordings do change, exclusion dropped in and endorsement are added.
Some could be a benefit and others may leave you exposed. The biggest issue Graham has found, is finding clients not having the right cover for their activities while others having insurance they don’t need, mainly due to doubling up on policies.

Martial Arts Australia (MAA) The Peak Industry Body, is an excellent source of support for School / Gyms / Club Owners.
